US President Donald Trump has shared an image portraying the Strait of Hormuz as United States territory, days after saying he could declare the strategic waterway part of the US.

Trump posted the map on Tuesday, with the Strait labelled “New US Territory,” reinforcing his earlier remarks about Washington taking control of the waterway.

Trump had earlier claimed the US Navy had imposed a complete blockade of the Strait and said he would declare it a US territory after defeating Iran.

Trump also separately claimed that the US had “total control” of the Strait and could maintain its control.

Iran has rejected the US position, insisting that the waterway will not reopen unless Washington ends its intervention and naval blockade and fulfils the terms of an agreement reached between the two countries on June 17.
