Two Airlink passenger jets flying just above Cape Town Stadium before Saturday’s rugby Test between South Africa and New Zealand thrilled about 56,000 spectators but sparked concerns over aviation safety.

Flight-tracking data indicated the lead Embraer jet flew just 41–46 feet above the stadium roof, with the second aircraft following closely behind. Airlink said the stunt was carefully planned, rehearsed and conducted within approved civil aviation safety limits, with three senior captains aboard each aircraft.

However, aviation experts questioned the narrow margin for error, warning that turbulence, a bird strike or other emergency at such a low altitude could leave pilots with little room to manoeuvre. The flyby revived South Africa’s tradition of dramatic aircraft displays at major rugby matches.
