Dr. Chidinma Nneka Okongwu, MBBS, MBA is a critical care physician, healthcare entrepreneur, patient advocate and emerging leader in neuro-rehabilitation and out-of-hospital healthcare. Her work is redefining what recovery should look like for patients and families beyond the hospital walls.

With a career built around clinical excellence, compassionate patient care and healthcare innovation, Dr. Okongwu currently serves as the Lead ICU Medical Officer at R-Jolad Hospital, Lagos where she provides leadership in the management of critically ill patients while contributing to clinical systems development, staff capacity building and quality improvement. Her work in critical care has included developing, reviewing and implementing clinical protocols, strengthening sepsis identification and response systems, and contributing to the establishment and development of critical care services. Her professional profile also reflects a strong commitment to mentorship and the continuous development of healthcare professionals.

Her most defining contribution, however, is her recognition that survival is not the same as recovery. This conviction led to the establishment and growth of LivingRite Care Health Services, a healthcare organisation dedicated to bridging the critical gap between hospital-based treatment and recovery in the home and community. Founded from the understanding that patients recovering from stroke, critical illness, major surgery and other debilitating conditions often face their greatest challenges after discharge, LivingRite Care provides structured, clinically guided and compassionate out-of-hospital rehabilitative care.

Through LivingRite Care, Dr. Okongwu and her team provide specialised home-based nursing and medical care, post-ICU recovery support, stroke and neuro-rehabilitation, post-surgical care, physiotherapy, geriatric care, palliative and hospice support, caregiver support and training, and other services designed to help patients regain function, dignity and independence within the familiar environment of their homes.

Its work with stroke survivors and post-ICU patients is especially noteworthy. LivingRite Care’s public-facing work demonstrates a strong emphasis on helping patients reclaim independence and supporting families through the often frightening and complex transition from hospital to home.

Her commitment to knowledge sharing extends into her professional and social media platforms. With a growing professional audience on LinkedIn, Dr. Okongwu consistently uses digital platforms to make complex health information understandable, challenge harmful misconceptions, advocate for patients and families, and promote conversations around critical care, stroke recovery, neurorehabilitation, women’s health, post-hospital care and compassionate healthcare delivery. Her public professional identity is firmly centred on Critical Care | Neurorehabilitation | Out-of-Hospital Care.

What distinguishes Dr. Okongwu is the coherence of her vision: she does not view critical care, rehabilitation and home healthcare as separate disciplines, but as connected stages of the patient’s healthcare journey. Her work asks an important question that is too often overlooked in healthcare—what happens to the patient after they survive?

Through her leadership at R-Jolad Hospital and the development of LivingRite Care Health Services, she has built a professional legacy around ensuring that patients do not simply survive illness, but are supported to recover, regain function, preserve dignity and return to meaningful living.

Her work is not merely about extending life; it is about restoring the quality, dignity and independence that make life worth living.

It is in recognition of her Sterling Accomplishments in Human Medicine (Home Healthcare and Medical Rehabilitation Services) in Nigeria that Dr. Chidinma Nneka Okongwu is deemed worthy to be conferred with the Woman of Merit Gold Award.
