Mrs. Joyce Ikechi-Mark is a seasoned nursing professional, healthcare executive and patient safety specialist with over two decades of experience in clinical practice, quality improvement and healthcare management. As Chief Nursing Officer of R-Jolad Hospital and Founder of J3L3 Quality Care Concepts, she has made significant contributions to strengthening clinical governance, improving patient outcomes and implementing international healthcare standards across Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Mrs. Ikechi-Mark was born into a distinguished family of fifteen children to the late Professor Dominic Nnamdi Ihuoma and the late Mrs. Matilda Nwanyimma Ihuoma. She is the fourteenth child, the last daughter, and was affectionately known as her father’s cherished child. Her father fondly called her Nnem Ugomma, the name of his beloved grandmother, whom he believed Joyce resembled in character and spirit.

Her parents initially lived in Lagos, where their first thirteen children were born, before the Nigerian Civil War necessitated their return to Mbaise in Imo State. Joyce and her younger brother were born after the war and were lovingly referred to by their parents as their “post-war gifts.”

She began her educational journey at Central School, Ogbe Ahiara, Mbaise, and briefly attended St. Patrick’s Secondary School, Ogbe Ahiara, before completing her secondary education at Eyinni High School, Challenge, Ibadan, Oyo State. At the age of sixteen, Joyce pursued her passion for nursing and midwifery by enrolling in the Midwifery Programme at the prestigious Holy Rosary Maternity Hospital, Waterside, Onitsha, Anambra State. She subsequently trained as a Registered Nurse at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Umulogho, Obowo, Imo State, graduating with Credit.

Shortly after completing her education, she relocated to Lagos and secured her first professional appointment at Premier Specialists Medical Centre, Victoria Island, where she commenced what would become a distinguished nursing career spanning more than two decades. Known for her compassion, professionalism, and commitment to excellence, Mrs. Joyce Ikechi-Mark steadily advanced through the ranks at Premier Specialists Medical Centre. Through continuous professional development and participation in numerous local and international training programmes, she broadened her clinical expertise and leadership capabilities. Her dedication and performance culminated in her appointment as Head of Nursing, a position she held until her relocation to the United Kingdom in 2009 to further her education.

While in the United Kingdom, Joyce attended Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, where she earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Nursing with First Class Honours and a Master of Science (MSc.) in Health Sciences Management with Distinction. In recognition of her exceptional academic achievements, she was featured in the university’s International Students’ Brochure as one of its outstanding international students. A highly accomplished healthcare quality improvement and patient safety expert, Joyce also holds a Diploma in Quality Improvement Management Principles and an Advanced Diploma in Quality Improvement with Specialisation in Healthcare from the Quality Professional Group, Chandigarh, India, both completed with Distinction.

Alongside her studies, Joyce worked as a Bank Nurse with the British Nursing Association and A24 Professional Group, gaining valuable experience across various healthcare settings in the Northeast of England. Following five successful years in the United Kingdom, she returned to Nigeria with a renewed commitment to advancing healthcare quality, patient safety, and nursing excellence.

Driven by her passion for improving healthcare outcomes, she transitioned fully into Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and joined Lagoon Hospitals in 2013 as a Quality Improvement Officer. Lagoon Hospitals was the first Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa. Within a short period, she was promoted to Quality Improvement Manager, where she led key quality and accreditation initiatives across the hospital network. Recognised for her unwavering commitment to patient safety and quality care, Joyce played an instrumental role in strengthening clinical governance, quality assurance, and patient-centred care practices across multiple hospital locations. Her colleagues affectionately nicknamed her “Margaret Thatcher” because of her firm commitment to standards, accountability, and excellence. During her tenure at Lagoon Hospitals, she successfully participated in and led four Joint Commission International reaccreditation cycles and was preparing the organisation for its fifth reaccreditation before her departure in 2020.

In April 2020, Joyce joined Evercare Hospital Lekki as its pioneer Quality Improvement Manager. In this role, she established the hospital’s quality management systems and led organisation-wide staff training on quality improvement and patient safety principles. She ensured that all quality documentation, policies, protocols, pathways, and guidelines were developed and implemented before the hospital commenced operations in March 2021. Her leadership delivered exceptional results. In September 2021, Joyce led Evercare Hospital Lekki to achieve SafeCare Level 5 Certification, the highest certification level and the first of such an achievement for a first-time applicant in Sub-Saharan Africa. She subsequently spearheaded preparations for Joint Commission International accreditation before leaving the organisation in November 2023.

Since December 2023, Joyce has served as the Chief Nursing Officer of R-Jolad Hospital. As a transformational and visionary leader, she has driven significant improvements in nursing practice, patient care standards, workforce development, and organisational performance. Under her leadership, the nursing team has evolved into one of the most respected and sought-after teams within the healthcare sector in Lagos State. She has also contributed significantly to transforming and standardising care across the organisation, helping position R-Jolad Hospital among Nigeria’s leading healthcare institutions. The hospital’s recognition through the NHEA Best Secondary Healthcare Facility Award in 2025 and 2026 reflects its unwavering commitment to quality healthcare delivery.

In addition to her hospital leadership responsibilities, Joyce founded J3L3 Quality Care Concepts, a healthcare consulting and training organisation dedicated to strengthening healthcare quality, patient safety, and professional development. She is a Certified American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor and is passionate about promoting preventive healthcare, healthy living, and first-aid education within corporate organisations, schools, and communities.

As a recognised Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, and Infection Prevention and Control specialist, Joyce and her team support hospitals and primary healthcare centres in preparing for international accreditations, including Joint Commission International (JCI), COHSASA, and SafeCare accreditation programmes. Her expertise includes healthcare quality systems, performance improvement methodologies, data-driven decision-making, and the implementation of global best practices that enhance patient outcomes and organisational excellence.

Above all, Joyce is known for her humility, generosity, integrity, and commitment to service. Throughout her career, she has positively influenced the lives of countless nurses, patients, healthcare professionals, and healthcare organisations. Her leadership, mentorship, and dedication to excellence continue to shape the future of nursing and healthcare delivery across Africa.

Joyce is happily married to Chief L. Ikechi-Mark Onyemaechi, a respected Lagos businessman and they are blessed with four sons: Jesse, Laurel, Ludger, and Jarlath.

It is in recognition of her Sterling Accomplishments in Nursing in Nigeria that Mrs. Joyce Ikechi-Mark is deemed worthy to be conferred with the Woman of Merit Gold Award.
