World record-holder Oluwatobiloba Amusan fell short of her medal aspirations on Friday, finishing outside the qualification range at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Amusan, who has been Team Nigeria’s brightest hope for a medal amid a challenging Olympic campaign, finished third in her semifinal race. Stark Grace of the United States claimed victory in the heat with a time of 12.39 seconds, followed by Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who clocked 12.50 seconds. Amusan, running from lane 6, recorded a time of 12.55 seconds, failing to secure a spot in the final.
The Nigerian sprinter, who set the world record of 12.12 seconds in Eugene, U.S., in July 2022, could not replicate her past success. Despite her impressive credentials, she was unable to qualify as one of the next fastest competitors, dashing her hopes of an Olympic medal in Paris.
Amusan’s performance was a disappointment for Team Nigeria, which has faced numerous setbacks during the Games. Her elimination leaves the nation’s contingent in Paris without one of its strongest prospects for Olympic glory.
