At least four people have been killed and dozens injured after two trains collided on the outskirts of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, in one of the country’s latest major rail disasters.
The accident occurred on Monday at Bekasi Timur Station in West Java, when a long-distance passenger train crashed into the rear of a stationary commuter train, causing severe damage to several carriages and trapping passengers inside.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, evacuating passengers and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Railway officials confirmed that around 38 passengers from the commuter train were hospitalised, while all 240 passengers aboard the long-distance train were safely evacuated.
Rescue operations continued into the night as crews worked to free people trapped in mangled sections of the train. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as recovery efforts progressed.
Local police have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision, with early reports indicating uncertainty over how the two trains came to be on the same track section at the time of impact.
The state-owned railway operator expressed condolences to victims and their families, describing the incident as a tragic loss.
Train accidents remain a recurring concern in Indonesia, where an aging rail infrastructure and high passenger volumes have contributed to multiple fatal incidents in recent years.
