The European Union (EU), has said that individuals agitating for Biafra should be allowed to protest and express themselves provided it falls within the ambits of the law.
The statement was contained in a letter signed by the Vice President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini and made available to members of the European Parliament who were signatories to a letter sent to him last December, accusing Nigeria of human rights violations.
In the response letter dated February 13, Mogherini revealed that the European Union was monitoring the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
Julie Ward, a member of the EU and an advocate and supporter of Biafra, has spoken strongly against the continued detention of Kanu.
“I fully share your concern on the violence that has erupted in relation to the Biafra movement. Individuals should be allowed to protest and express themselves as long as they exercise this right in a peaceful manner,” she said.
