The Ondo State Government has ordered the fumigation of the river where a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, following complaints by residents about a strong stench emanating from the water.

The directive was issued by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as part of measures to address potential health risks and prevent possible disease outbreaks in the affected community.

The river serves as a major source of livelihood for residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities, raising concerns over the potential impact of the incident on public health and local economic activities.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the governor also directed the Ilaje Local Government Council to provide water tankers for the continuous supply of potable water if assessments establish that the river is severely polluted and unsafe for use.

According to the statement, the alternative water supply arrangement is expected to remain in place pending a lasting solution to the pollution concerns.

Governor Aiyedatiwa further directed the state ministries of Health and Environment to distribute nose masks and other essential health kits to residents as precautionary measures against potential health hazards.

The governor also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing evacuation efforts and ensuring the safety and welfare of residents in the affected community.
