Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day fuel discount at NNPC stations as an election-driven publicity stunt that would not address Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis.
In a statement on Thursday by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of offering temporary relief after years of rising fuel prices and economic hardship.
He questioned the initiative’s effectiveness, noting that the government had yet to disclose the savings per litre or guarantee that transport operators would reduce fares.
Atiku said the discount would leave Nigerians facing high fuel prices, transport costs and food prices once it expired, arguing that the country needed lasting economic relief rather than a temporary intervention.
He reiterated his proposal for capped and budgeted production support tied to locally refined fuel, with safeguards to ensure consumers benefit and domestic refining is supported.
“Tinubu made life expensive. I will make life affordable again,” he said.
