Resident doctors in Kaduna state on Tuesday embarked on an indefinite strike over what they described as the deplorable state of healthcare facilities in the state government – owned hospitals.

The President, Association of Resident Doctors in the state, Dr. Joseph Jokshan at a press briefing on Monday night said the state government had not responded to any of their demands which were issued three weeks ago.

He said although the doctors were pained to embark on the strike, it was unfortunate that they could not effectively carry out their tasks of saving lives in the current sorry state of the healthcare facilities.

He further listed some of the issues that prompted the industrial action to include poor funding, inadequate equipping and staffing of hospitals and the non-provision of conducive working and living environments for doctors, health workers and patients.

While calling for the immediate implementation of the already approved funding for residency training of Kaduna State doctors in their chosen fields as well as their due promotions, Jokshan called on the general public to join them in the struggle to persuade the government to do the needful.
