Ibrahim Kpotun Idris has been appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Acting Inspector – General of the Nigeria Police Force. Idris replaces Solomon Ehigiator Arase who retired from service having reached the maximum 35 years of service on June 21.
According to a press statement released by Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, the new Police helmsman hails from Kutigi in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State and was born on January 15, 1959. A graduate of Agricultural Science from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, he enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force in 1984.
Idris who also holds a Bachelors degree in Law from the University of Maiduguri has functioned in several distinguished units of the Force including the Police Mobile Force Unit, where he served for 17 years. He has served as Commissioner of Police in Nassarawa and Kano states. Until his latest appointment, he was Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He served meritoriously in the United Nations Missions in Liberia and East Timor. In recognition of his outstanding performance, the President of the Republic of East Timor awarded him the coveted honour of “Medal of Merit.”
The new police boss who was introduced to the Presidential Villa dignitaries by the outgoing Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, will become the nation’s 19th IGP when he eventually gets a substantive confirmation by the President.
