The death toll from severe flooding in Kenya has risen to 42 after days of heavy rainfall triggered flash floods across several regions, police said on Sunday.
At least 26 of the victims were recorded in the capital, Nairobi, where floodwaters swept through low-lying neighbourhoods and informal settlements, submerging homes and carrying away vehicles as rivers overflowed their banks.
Authorities said fatalities were also reported in several counties as torrential rains flooded roads, disrupted transport and forced evacuations in multiple communities. Rescue teams are continuing search and evacuation operations in affected areas.
Kenya’s Public Service and Special Programmes Minister, Geoffrey Ruku, confirmed the death toll and said emergency response teams had been deployed to assist affected communities.
He added that the government would cover hospital expenses for those injured and burial costs for families who lost relatives in the disaster.
Floodwaters have caused widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure, particularly in Nairobi and surrounding areas.
