Invaders suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have once more unleashed terror on Benue State. The attack launched over the weekend was on Turan Council ward in Logo Local Government Area.

The attack has reportedly left some 59 people dead and scores of other persons injured in varying degrees. Many people are said to be missing. Punch reports that the killings were a result of renewed hostilities between the herdsmen and farmers at the ward.

A source who spoke with the newspaper’s correspondent, Attah Ede, said attackers numbering over 3000, spread themselves across the ward and were still shooting sporadically by Sunday morning.

The Punch report quoted a member representing Logo Constituency at the Benue State House of Assembly, Kest Kyange as saying: “As of this morning, the calls I made confirmed to me that about 59 persons including a traditional ruler were killed while many others are still missing. The women, children and the elderly have all fled their homes to take refuge in Ugba, headquarters of Logo Local Government Area.”

The Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Police Command, ASP Moses Iyamu also confirmed that there were other attacks in the early hours of Sunday and that more mobile policemen had been drafted to the area to ensure that the incident did not degenerate into an uncontrollable situation.
