A respite of almost two weeks from attacks by Niger Delta Avengers on Nigeria’s oil pipelines and installations appears to be boosting the country’s oil fortunes. Oil production has been officially reported to be on the rise once more.
Group General Manager, Corporate Affairs, of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Garba Deen Muhammed, says oil production has risen to around 1.9 million barrels per day since last week. At the beginning of June, NNPC said production per day had dropped to 1.6 million barrels.
According to Muhammed: “Production has increased because we are making repairs to damaged pipelines and installations. And we have not had any major attacks in recent times.”
Curiously, when reports claimed that the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups in the region had agreed on a 30-day ceasefire so President Muhammadu Buhari could work on their grievances, the NDA dismissed them. The group said: “The NDA High Command cannot remember having any agreement on ceasefire with the Nigerian Government.”
