After arriving Istanbul in the early hours of the morning, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has addressed a joyous crowd to whom he vowed to remain leader. Erdogan arrived Istanbul after Prime Minister Binali Yildirim had managed to tell one of the few available media services that the situation was under control.
Following the coup plot, a new Chief of Army Staff has been appointed and he said that 194 people had been killed of which 104 were coup plotters and 47 being ordinary civilians. The Turkish people came out in huge turnouts to protest against the coup and show their support for the democratically elected President, Erdogan. This was after the President managed to make a FaceTime call urging his people to repel the coup.
So far, a total of 1,563 military personnel have been detained and images to confirm this have emerged showing military men surrendering to the existing government. President Erdogan, speaking to a news conference earlier, had said that those who plotted the coup would “pay a heavy price” for the “act of treason.” He also said at the conference: “The president, whom 52 percent of the people brought to power, is in charge. This government brought to power by the people, is in charge. They won’t succeed as long as we stand against them by risking everything.”
