Brazil’s Senate has just voted to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office for alleged budget fraud by a 61-20 man count. This comes as a major blow to the Workers’ Party that has held power for thirteen years in the world’s 7th largest economy and host nation of the 2016 Olympics.
Rousseff’s alleged manipulation of government accounts to conceal budget deficits is believed to have helped her win the 2014 elections as the true state of the nation’s crumbling economy was hidden.
Claiming unfairness, Dilma Rousseff said on Monday during a Senate hearing, “From the day after I was elected, several measures were taken to destabilize my government. And you have been systematically making accusations against me.”
Michel Temer, who was Rousseff’s vice and then, Acting President until today’s pronouncement, will automatically take the helms of power and serve out her tenure which expires on January 1, 2019.
