Respite may soon come the way of domestic airlines operating in Nigeria as their agitation for a reduction in the cost of providing major aviation services has finally got the attention of the Federal Government.
The President, Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI), Gbenga Olowo and Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema had argued that the various charges levied on airlines by aviation agencies were responsible for the collapse of over 100 airlines in the country, adding that due to the harsh and unfriendly operation conditions for airline companies in Nigeria, they were not making the profits needed for them to remain in business..
However, on Monday, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo revealed that the Federal Government was making frantic efforts to bring down the cost of aviation services as the sector was going to play a significant role in the economic development of the country.
Osinbajo made the revelation while receiving the President of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu who paid him a courtesy call while attending a conference of the organization on Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles (UAV) in Abuja.
“We believe that aviation cost will go down and that more people will participate, more people will use the services of the airlines and people will use the airports as well,” Osinbajo said.
While commending ICAO for the work it has done in the world’s aviation industry, Osinbajo expressed delight that the country has been given the honour to host the International World Aviation Forum in Abuja later this year.
