Former Ivorian international and Chelsea FC Football star, Didier Drogba has inaugurated a school built in the village of Onahia Pokou – Kouamekro, which is in his region in Cote d’ Ivoire.
Under the auspices of the Didier Drogba Foundation with support from Nestle and the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI), about 350 children could now access quality education in the cocoa growing community.
“We have been working on this project for the last two years and I am proud to see it completed. The belief of my foundation has always been if we give children access to health and education, we will build future generations of doctors, scientists, businessmen and women and that is how we build a better Africa,” Drogba said at the event.
He added: “When I started working with Nestle, I explained our vision and they have given us great logistical help and support on the ground to make the construction of this school a reality.”
Like any other public school in the country, the Didier Drogba School will be handed over to the government to run and it will replace an existing school in Pokou – Kouamekro which was built with mud and lacks necessary facilities.
The fully furnished school has six classrooms, kindergarten class, latrines, a football field and three teachers’ quarters.
