Security operatives in Ghana on Wednesday arrested eight persons in connection with the kidnapping of two Canadian women in Kumasi.
The women who have since been rescued were abducted at gunpoint outside Dema Private Hostel in Kenyasi on Tuesday last week.
According to Ghana’s Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, three of the kidnappers are Nigerians while the remaining five are Ghanaians.
Nkrumah said after the initial arrest of one of the suspects who was injured in the process, the police discovered the hideout where the kidnappers were holding the women captive and stormed the place around 5.00 am.
At the time of the rescue, the suspects reportedly opened fire on the operatives of the Ghanaian Police who returned same and overpowered the kidnappers.
The two Canadian women, who are currently in Accra, the country’s capital however sustained no injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
Ghanaian officials say the suspects would be soon be arraigned before a court while investigations continue.
