Dr Bodunrin Ibitola Osikomaiya is a highly resourceful physician who has made a mark in the field of haematology. She is the current Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service.

By her position as the head of the state’s Blood Transfusion Service, Bodunrin co – ordinates every activity that relates to blood transfusion in Nigeria’s most populous state.

She supervises and regulates all blood transfusion services, both public and private, in the state. She is in charge of the certification of all private blood banks and ensures that they comply with the Lagos State blood transfusion policy.

Dr Bodunrin Osikomaiya ensures quality control and quality assurance measures on all blood transfusion matters in the state. Of crucial importance is her role as the co-ordinator of sensitization and advocacy activities for voluntary blood donation, recruitment and retention of voluntary blood donors and the efficient processing and storage of blood and blood products.

Before now, Bodunrin was Consultant Haematologist and Blood Transfusion Specialist with the Lagos State Health Service Commission. She worked at Gbagada General Hospital as the co-ordinator of all administrative duties of the Haematology Department of the hospital.

At Gbagada General Hospital, she was Head, Blood Transfusion Committee (BTC); Head, Infections Prevention Committee (IPC); Deputy Chair, Quality Assurance Committee (QAC); Member, Theatre Users’ Committee and Member, Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR).

Born on December 25, 1978, Bodunrin attended Lagos State Model College, Igbokuta where she earned her Senior Secondary School Certificate in 1995. She proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife in 1997 to read Medicine and graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B).

She graduated from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria’s Faculty of Pathology in 2015 and because a Fellow (FMCPATH) in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Also, in 2015, she earned the Advanced Diploma in Hospital Management from the College of Medicine, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi – Araba, Lagos. In April, 2016, she became a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in Laboratory Medicine.

Bodunrin is currently pursuing an M.Sc in Public Health at the University of Suffolk, Ipswich, UK.

This highly cerebral and resourceful physician has also played important roles in the fight by the Lagos State Government against COVID – 19. She has worked as Lead Investigator, Convalescent Plasma Clinical Trial; Coordinator, COVID Follow – up and Outpatient Clinic; Member, Incidence Command Centre of the COVID Response as well as Member, COVID Research Pillar.

Dr Bodunrin Osikomaiya’s professional life began as a House Officer at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile – Ife, Osun State. She was on Youth Service at General Hospital, Mararaba, Nasarawa State from January to September 2007.

She had a stint as Medical Officer at Duro Soleye Hospitals, Ikeja from October 2007 to November 2008. She worked as Community Health Provider with Hygeia Health Management Organization. She was Senior Registrar, Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital from September 2009 to February 2016.

Bodunrin has numerous projects, research articles and publications to her credit. She has attended a lot of training, conferences, seminars and workshops.

It is in recognition of her contribution to national development in the field of Human Medicine (Haematology) that Dr Bodunrin Ibitola Osikomaiya was deemed worthy to be conferred with the Woman of Merit Gold Award which is part of the 21st PSR National Awards.
