Everton have been docked 10 points immediately after an independent commission found the club breached Premier League profit and sustainability regulations. The biggest deduction in league history, drops Everton into the relegation zone.
The Premier League said Everton conceded during a 5-day hearing that they posted losses exceeding the £105 million threshold over a multi-year period. The commission determined Everton’s losses totaled £124.5 million in violation of financial guidelines.
Everton expressed shock and disappointment at the “harsh and unreasonable” sanction. The club had narrowly avoided relegation last season but now faces renewed threat of dropping to the Championship. Everton say they will appeal the “disproportionate” points deduction.
The severe penalty spotlights the financial fragility of some Premier League clubs. Everton insists their submitted evidence did not warrant such a drastic sporting punishment. With the club plunged into crisis, their upcoming appeal could have massive implications in the fight to remain in the top flight.
