The Lagos state government remains undeterred in its bid to reclaim drainage rights of way despite criticism over the move.

Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab reaffirmed authorities will enforce the 7-meter setback policy along water channels, specifically calling out violations along the Lekki-Ikota river.

Earlier this week, the state issued 7-day contravention notices to owners of buildings encroaching on setbacks in Agungi, Ajiran and other areas. It warned of clampdowns if the structures aren’t removed by the deadline.

The action has sparked allegations of targeting certain ethnic groups, especially on social media.

However, Wahab dismissed such claims as propaganda and blackmail. In a fiery statement on Thursday, he insisted no one is above the law.

“We are not going to bow to any propaganda or threat. The era of lawlessness is completely over!” the commissioner avowed.

Lagos has battled perennial flooding, often exacerbated by haphazard construction along waterways. Authorities say the renewed enforcement aims to mitigate this through proper town planning.
