In a significant development for Zenith Bank Plc, the Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Dr. Adaora Umeoji as the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Umeoji’s appointment, effective from June 1, 2024, is subject to approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). She will succeed Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose tenure concludes on May 31, 2024. Notably, Dr. Umeoji’s elevation to this position makes her the first female to lead Zenith Bank, underscoring the institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
With a wealth of experience spanning close to three decades, including twenty-six years at Zenith Bank, Dr. Umeoji brings a formidable background to her new role. She has served as the Deputy Managing Director since October 28, 2016, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic acumen throughout her tenure.
A distinguished academic and professional, Dr. Umeoji holds multiple degrees and certifications from esteemed institutions worldwide. She is an alumna of Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, and the University of Salford, among others. Additionally, her contributions to the banking industry and society at large have been recognized through various accolades and honors, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) conferred by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Umeoji is known for her philanthropic endeavors, particularly through initiatives such as the Pink Breathe Cancer Foundation and the Adorable Foundation. These organizations focus on supporting cancer patients and promoting education for underprivileged children, embodying Dr. Umeoji’s commitment to societal welfare.
