The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union have announced a 7-day warning strike, set to commence on March 18, 2024, demanding the payment of four months’ withheld salaries following the 2022 nationwide strike. This decision emerged from the joint action committee of the two unions after a meeting held in Akure over the weekend.
Mohammed Ibrahim, the SSANU president, disclosed during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday that the decision for the warning strike was made as a last resort. He stated, “If nothing is done by the Federal Government to positively address this situation and respond to our previous letters to them, the members of the two unions may be forced to meet soon to take all lawful and stringent decisions on the matter.” This development follows accusations by the unions against the FG of treating their members with “disdain.”
President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed the payment of withheld salaries for university workers due to their 2022 strike. However, SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) stated they were yet to receive salaries for that period, despite issuing a one-week ultimatum about two weeks ago.
