Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced a significant increase in the minimum wage for civil servants in the state, setting it at N70,000. The governor made this announcement during the commissioning of the new Labour House in Edo State on Monday.
The newly inaugurated Labour House, located along Temboga Road in Benin City, was named after former Governor of the State and former NLC President, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Governor Obaseki emphasized the importance of the cordial relationship between the state government and labour unions in ensuring peace and industrial harmony. He acknowledged the challenges faced by workers due to economic factors such as devaluation, high food prices, and inflation, which have eroded the purchasing power of the current N40,000 minimum wage.
In response to these challenges, Obaseki stated, “For us in Edo State, we have decided to move the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000 effective from 1st of May 2024.” He further expressed openness to adjust the wage further if the Federal Government imposes a higher minimum wage.
The governor commended the labour unions for their partnership in pursuing institutional reforms and improving the welfare of workers in the state. He highlighted achievements such as digitalizing the civil service, prompt payment of salaries, life and health insurance for workers, among others.
In response, the President of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Engr. Festus Osifo, praised Governor Obaseki’s developmental achievements and thanked him for addressing the plight of workers in Edo State.
The Chairman of NLC Edo State, Comrade Odion Olaye, expressed gratitude for the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare and lauded the completion of the Labour House, a project long-awaited by Edo workers.
