Lionel Messi was forced off with a right ankle injury during Argentina’s 1-0 Copa América final win against Colombia at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. Lautaro Martinez secured the victory in extra time, earning Argentina their record 16th Copa crown and third consecutive major tournament title after winning the Copa in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022.

Messi collapsed to the ground in the 64th minute, signaling distress to the Argentina bench. Trainers attended to him for several minutes before he was helped to his feet, visibly frustrated as he removed his shoe and captain’s armband. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was emotional, covering his face and sobbing on the sidelines, with cameras showing his severely swollen right ankle. Nicolás González replaced him.

Earlier in the match, Messi had gone down after a strong challenge from Colombia’s Santiago Arias, awkwardly planting his right leg and grabbing at his lower right leg. Despite being treated and reentering the game, Messi had been dealing with leg discomfort throughout the tournament, even missing Argentina’s group stage finale.

The final was scoreless when Messi exited, but his team persevered against a resilient Colombian side, unbeaten in 28 consecutive games. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised Messi’s determination, stating, “Leo is the greatest player in history. He never wants to leave the pitch. He has a swollen ankle and he wants to keep on playing.”

Scaloni emphasized Messi’s commitment to his teammates, saying, “He wants to continue playing because he doesn’t want to abandon his teammates. He doesn’t want to leave them on the pitch even when he’s in that condition. He doesn’t feel well when he has to leave and he was born to be on the pitch.”

Despite his injury, Messi’s presence and leadership contributed to Argentina’s hard-fought victory, cementing their status as champions once again.
