President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences following the passing of Issa Hayatou, the former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who died on Thursday at the age of 77.

In an official statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu described Hayatou’s death as a “huge loss” to the global football community. He acknowledged Hayatou’s significant contributions to the development of football across Africa and beyond.

Hayatou, who also served as the acting President of FIFA, was a prominent figure in African football, leaving an indelible mark on the sport during his tenure. His leadership helped elevate African football to new heights on the global stage.

President Tinubu expressed his sympathies to the Cameroonian Football Federation, the people of Cameroon, and the broader African football community. He offered prayers for Hayatou’s family, wishing them strength during this difficult time.

“President Bola Tinubu extends his condolences to the family of Mr. Issa Hayatou, former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who passed away at the age of 77 on Thursday,” the statement read. “Mr. Hayatou was also a one-time acting President of FIFA—the world’s football governing body. The President commiserates with the Cameroonian Football Federation, the people of Cameroon, and the African football community.”

“The President describes the passing of the legendary football administrator as a huge loss, underlining his contributions to the development of the sport in Africa and beyond. The President prays for the repose of the soul of the departed and strength to his family at this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
