President Bola Tinubu has refused to sign a bill that sought to extend the tenure of service for legislative officers at the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly from 35 to 40 years, while also raising their retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
The decision was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during today’s Senate session.
The controversial bill, first introduced in the 7th Assembly and reintroduced in the 9th Assembly, faced multiple setbacks. In February 2024, it was delayed for further research after many senators opposed it.
President Tinubu, in his letter, explained, “Upon thorough examination and careful consideration, I have decided to withhold my assent to the bill.” He expressed appreciation for the Senate’s work but emphasized that his decision was made in accordance with the powers granted by the Nigerian Constitution.
Senate President Akpabio read the letter during the resumption of the Senate’s legislative sitting after an eight-week recess.
