The Nigerian Senate has established a special committee to review contentious aspects of the Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly. The committee, led by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), is tasked with meeting the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to address disputed provisions in the bills and provide recommendations to the Senate before public hearings.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin announced the development during Wednesday’s plenary session, emphasizing the importance of resolving the issues in the interest of national unity and stability.
Barau stated, “We decided to put politics, ethnicity, and regionalism aside to sit among ourselves and find a way forward regarding the tax reform bills. After engaging with the executive arm of government, it was agreed that a forum should be convened to address areas of disagreement and ensure the country remains united in solving its problems.”
He added that the collaboration with the executive, including the Attorney General, aims to prevent further exacerbation of existing challenges such as insecurity and economic instability.
The Committee on Finance, which had been handling the bills, has been directed to pause its activities, including public hearings, until the committee concludes its work.
The Tax Reform Bills, submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on October 3, 2024, aim to harmonize, coordinate, and resolve disputes arising from revenue administration in Nigeria. However, the proposed legislation has sparked widespread controversy, particularly in the northern region, leading to calls for further consultation.
