The Federal Government has issued a high alert over anticipated heavy rainfall across 19 states and 76 locations, warning of possible severe flooding over a five-day period, from August 5 to August 9, 2025.
The alert, issued Tuesday by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, urged residents, state governments, and stakeholders to take immediate precautionary actions to mitigate potential loss of lives and property.
This latest warning comes amid fresh reports of devastating floods in Ogun and Gombe states, with heavy rains submerging homes and displacing residents. Other states affected by recent flooding include Lagos, Plateau, Anambra, and Delta.
According to the forecast obtained by our correspondent, the states likely to be impacted include Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Cross River, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Gombe.
The affected communities include Edor, Eket, Ikom, Tafawa-Balewa, Abakaliki, Obubra, Keffi, Buruku, Zaria, Daura, Bagudo, Gezawa, Kontagora, Mangu, Donga, Gumel, Potiskum, Anka, and Sokoto, among others.
The 2025 flooding season has already taken a heavy toll on Nigeria. According to a new situation report released Tuesday by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), at least 191 lives have been lost, 94 persons are missing, and over 134,000 people have been affected by floods across 20 states and 47 local government areas.
Niger State recorded the highest number of fatalities with 163 deaths, followed by Adamawa (26), and one death each in Borno and Gombe states.
So far this year, 48,056 people have been displaced, 239 injured, 9,499 homes damaged, and 9,450 farmlands affected. Children and women have been disproportionately affected, with NEMA’s data showing 60,071 children, 41,539 women, and 27,121 men among the victims. Additionally, 5,704 elderly persons and 1,874 people living with disabilities have been impacted.
