Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over alleged N432bn corruption linked to his administration.

Sources said El-Rufai, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was interrogated over findings in a 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which accused his government of misappropriating loans and violating procurement procedures between 2015 and 2023.

The EFCC confirmed that he honoured its invitation but remained in custody as of Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has filed criminal charges against El-Rufai over the alleged unlawful interception of communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The charges followed El-Rufai’s admission during an interview on Arise TV that he and others listened to calls allegedly tapped from Ribadu’s phone. Prosecutors said the act threatened national security. No arraignment date has been fixed.
