The Nigeria Police Force in Delta State has dismissed claims that a festival in Ozoro was a “rape festival,” stating that no victim has officially reported rape.
Police spokesperson Bright Edafe on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme said investigations have so far found no evidence of rape, although authorities are probing incidents of sexual assault linked to the event.
The controversial gathering, identified as a traditional festival, drew widespread criticism after videos surfaced showing women being harassed.
Police said the event was poorly organised and held without notifying relevant authorities, contributing to the breakdown of order. Several suspects, including the alleged organiser, have been arrested.
The incident has sparked outrage across the country, with calls for accountability and stronger protection for women.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing, while the Delta State Government has moved to ban the festival, stressing that cultural practices must not excuse criminal acts.
