President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity across the country, describing it as a major threat to national development.

The President made the commitment on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence for the Eid el-Fitr celebration.

Tinubu said his administration is strengthening international partnerships to boost security, revealing ongoing discussions with foreign leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, on the provision of equipment and support.

“Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity,” the President said, urging governors to support efforts to defeat criminal elements.

He also called on state leaders to prioritise the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians, warning that the ongoing Middle East crisis could drive inflation and affect purchasing power. He urged governors to introduce measures to cushion rising energy and transportation costs.

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, assured that governors are working collectively to address insecurity, adding that discussions on state policing are ongoing.

He noted that proposals on state police would be presented to the National Assembly to establish a legal framework.

The meeting was attended by governors from across the federation, reflecting growing collaboration between federal and state governments to address security and economic challenges.
