The embattled senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye attended the Senate plenary on Wednesday after more than a month’s absence.
Melaye, who attended the chamber with clutches and a neck support had been bed-ridden at the intensive care unit of the National Hospital, Abuja after a failed attempt to evade being taken to Kogi State by the Nigeria Police for arraignment in court.
Raising a point of order on Wednesday, Melaye thanked his colleagues, members of the House of Representatives, his constituents and Nigerians for standing by him during his travails with the police.
He also thanked the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for their support and thereafter mandated the Sergeant-at-Arms to create a seat for him at the opposition wing of the chamber.
There was however chaos when he dramatically announced that he would sit beside former Senate President, David Mark pending the time a seat will be allocated to him.
Melaye’s movement was greeted by rowdiness among lawmakers at the Senate floor with those who spoke later expressing mixed reactions. The PDP senators spoke in favour of his move while those from the All Progressives Congress (APC) which he belongs to tried to prevent his movement.
He is, however, yet to officially join the PDP. To do so, Senator Melaye will have to write the Senate President about his decision to leave his party and join the opposition. The letter will then be read during plenary at the Senate.
