World War II and former United States President, George Herbert Walker Bush has died at the age of 94.
According to a statement released by his family on Friday night, Bush, who was elected the 41st President of the United States and father to the nation’s 43rd president died late on Friday.
“Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died. George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for.
“The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.” the statement said.
His office also released a statement saying: “George Herbert Walker Bush, World War II naval aviator, Texas oil pioneer and 41st President of the United States of America, died on November 30, 2018.
“He was 94 and is survived by his five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two siblings.
“He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Barbara; his second child Pauline “Robin” Bush and his brothers, Prescott and William or “Bucky” Bush.”
Capping a long political career, including Vice President under Ronald Reagan, Bush was elected to the White House in 1988 on a ticket with Senator Dan Quayle, defeating Democrat Michael Dukakis and his running mate, Senator Lloyd Bentsen.
Bush, a strong advocate of a kinder, gentler conservatism, pursued policies that helped topple the Soviet empire and initiated military campaigns that ousted one foreign dictator and crippled another.
Bush, whose wife, Barbara died on April 17 this year at the age of 92 lived longer than any other US president.
A day after Barbara’s funeral on April 21, the senior Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital for a blood infection. He had also been taken there in April 2017 and in January 2017 for treatment related to pneumonia.
Their 73-year marriage was also longer than that of any presidential couple in the country’s history. Their children included former President George W. Bush and and former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush.
