Professor Richard Iyiola Akindele, the Obafemi Awolowo University lecturer who has been standing trial for demanding sex from a female postgraduate student in exchange for marks has been sentenced to two years in jail.
The sentence followed a ‘guilty’ plea he entered into this Monday at a Federal High Court sitting in Oshogbo ,the Osun State capital.
When Akindele was first arraigned on November 19 before the court by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission for allegedly demanding sex from one Monica Osagie in exchange for marks, he pleaded ‘not guilty’.
However, the professor of accountancy apparently had a change of heart this Monday and pleaded guilty.
In sentencing him, Presiding Judge, Justice Maureen Onyetenu said: “This type of issue is too rampant in our tertiary institutions. We send children to school, they come back telling us that lecturers want to sleep with them. We cannot continue like this . Somebody has to be used as example.”
