President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public service workers across all levels for six months, following a meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday.
The meeting, involving Labour Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi and an NLC delegation led by Joe Ajaero, also agreed on the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears from May 1, 2026, in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.
The transport support is expected to commence in November 2026 to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
Both parties also agreed to establish a negotiation committee to begin discussions immediately and determine an effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.
The agreement comes as the NLC’s four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to reduce fuel prices and review the ₦70,000 minimum wage expires.
