Twenty years after Nigeria’s Olympic football squad gave Nigerians reason to celebrate across her borders, the poor state of football in the nation was slightly redeemed today.
After a woeful performance against Germany, Samson Siasia’s boys, the Dream Team VI, defeated Honduras 3 goals to 2, grabbing the bronze medal in the Men’s Football category at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
It was Sadiq Umar who scored first in the 34th minute, followed by Aminu in the 47th and then a pass from Mikel Obi made Sadiq wrap up Nigeria’s goals with a thunderous shot in the 54th minute.
Honduras managed to retaliate with two goals later in the game and it seemed they would equalize but the Nigerian team had already done the damage.
The more glittering medals will be battled for later tonight in a cracker between Brazil and Germany, a seeming rematch after the World Cup.
