The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, landed in Nigeria for a 72-hour tour promoting the Invictus Games. On Friday, the royal couple touched down in the West African nation, arriving on a British Airways overnight flight.
Reports had circulated earlier indicating that Harry and Meghan’s visit to Nigeria was at the invitation of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, with a focus on interacting with wounded soldiers. Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, the Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters (DHQ), confirmed this arrangement on Thursday.
During their three-day stay in Nigeria, Prince Harry, founder of the Invictus Games, will engage with wounded soldiers and their families. Marquis emphasized that the visit, scheduled from May 10th to May 13th, 2024, is intended to support the recovery efforts of the injured servicemen.
“We realized that 80% of our soldiers have been involved in this recovery program, they are getting better. Their outlook to life is positive,” AVM Marquis stated.
Upon their arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja earlier today, Nigerian officials greeted the royal couple. Subsequently, Prince Harry and Meghan were escorted to a waiting minibus to rest before their first engagement at the Defence Headquarters later in the day.
“After that, they will travel to Kaduna to meet wounded soldiers at a military hospital there before returning to Abuja for other engagements,” said defence spokesperson Brigadier General Tukur Gusau.
