Dr. Obinna George Smart Unegbu hails from Umuchima Village in Ihiagwa, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State. He was born in Lagos and had his primary and secondary education at Model Primary School Oshodi and Comprehensive Secondary School, also in Oshodi, Lagos State.

 His tertiary education started at Imo State University where he enrolled to study Education/Linguistics before moving to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to obtain a degree. He has a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management from UNICAF.

 Obinna Unegbu’s passion for education was a primal factor that drove him to success. After his graduation from UNN and serving his country, he returned to his hometown where he engaged in a community development project. He dedicated his first five years after graduation to  trying to reform and rejuvenate the dying education system in his home town. He and other educated youths voluntarily taught in public secondary schools.

From there, he engaged in some menial business before delving into Sport Betting (Bet9ja). He succeeded tremendously as he became one of the biggest Grandmasters of Bet9ja in South East and South South regions of Nigeria. Despite becoming very successful in sport betting business, Obinna never forgot his love for education.

He established a world class international school which inspires students to be independent thinkers and problem solvers at Ihiagwa on April 2, 2o18. He named it Shekinah British International School (previously known as Princess Shekinah International School). The mission was to provide high quality international education in a safe and caring environment that will enable students reach their full potential and become global citizens.

The school received her first students in September, 2018. Through his determination and guidance, the it has gradually become one of the best schools in the country. As a result of Dr. George Smart Unegbu’s contributionto education, he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Professional Fellowship Award, a doctorate given under the Common Seal of the Institute of Corporate and Public Administrators of Nigeria on November, 21, 2021. In 2023, the school was recognized as the best private secondary school in Imo State and the fourth best secondary school in Nigeria.

Due to his love for human resource development and his philanthropic nature, Obinna has consistently invested in the youths of his community and those in other places in the South East and South South regions of the country. He is involved in the development of his community through his Human Capacity Project which includes: ICT Training, Entrepreneurship Training, starting of small-scale businesses for youths and giving out loans to business owners for expansion .

He has empowered over 10,000 young people to become entrepreneurs in the South East and South South regions. He has also assisted many youths in these regions to further their education both within and outside Nigeria. Indeed his exploits as a human  capacity builder cannot be exhausted.

As a result of his remarkable and transformative achievements, Dr. Unegbu has received various awards. They include: Award of Excellence by National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) Imo State in recognition of his great contribution to Quality Education Service Delivery on February 24, 2022; Merit Award by Arise Africa as a life time achiever on July 30, 2022; Education Icon Award by University of Nigeria Alumni Association (UNAA) on November 17, 2022; Honorary Community Support Award on International Volunteers Day, November 5, 2022; Award of Honour by Ihiagwa Autonomous Community for his immense contribution to the community. He was also certified by the Imo State Ministry of Justice, Owerri as  Justice of the Peace in Imo State on August 16, 2022.

 Obinna  is happily married to Mrs. Joy Smart Unegbu and their union is blessed with three children.

It was in recognition of his contribution to nation building in the area of Development, Management and Delivery of Quality Education in Nigeria that Dr. Obinna George Smart Unegbu was deemed worthy to be conferred with the Nigerian Achievement Award.
