The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, as public holidays to mark the 2026 Eid-el-Adha celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Monday through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

The government congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the celebration and urged citizens to use the period to pray for peace, unity, and national development.

According to the statement, Eid-el-Adha represents faith, sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity, while also promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

The Federal Government called on Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s progress and seek divine guidance as the country continues efforts to strengthen security and economic stability.

Preparations for the celebration have intensified across the country, especially in northern states, with increased activities reported in transport hubs, markets, and livestock centres ahead of the festivities.

Security agencies are also expected to deploy personnel to prayer grounds, highways, and public spaces to ensure peaceful celebrations nationwide.
