The Federal Government has flagged off the rehabilitation of the Bama-Banki and Dikwa-Gamboru-Ngala roads in Borno State, describing the projects as critical to improving security, trade and post-insurgency recovery in the North-East.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the ceremony, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the roads would restore mobility, reconnect communities and enhance cross-border trade with Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic, while improving access for security agencies.
He stressed that road infrastructure is central to economic growth and lasting peace, noting that poor roads increase the cost of living, hinder commerce and weaken security operations.
Shettima said the projects, which include bridges, drainage and reinforced concrete pavement, reflect the administration’s commitment to durable infrastructure and value for public resources.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum said the roads would stimulate economic activities within the state and neighbouring countries, while Works Minister David Umahi disclosed that the projects, first awarded in 2021, now cost over ₦70 billion and ₦67 billion respectively for their first phases.
Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, whose company is supporting the projects through tax credit financing, said the roads would strengthen regional trade and reaffirmed the group’s commitment to investing in critical infrastructure across Nigeria.
