The Presidential Working Group on the proposed National Policing Bill has invited Nigerians to submit memoranda and policy proposals to help shape the legal and operational framework for state policing.

Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, announced the call after a meeting at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.

According to him, the proposed legislation will establish national standards for state police, covering recruitment, training, funding, oversight, human rights, firearms control and accountability, while defining the transition to a dual-policing system.

The call for memoranda will remain open for two weeks, with submissions from citizens, security agencies, civil society, state governments, academics and other stakeholders to be reviewed before the draft bill is finalised and forwarded to the National Assembly.

The Working Group has adopted a seven-week work plan ending September 14, 2026, with the draft Executive Bill scheduled for presentation to President Bola Tinubu on September 3.

Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, said the bill is designed to strengthen security while preventing the misuse of state police for political persecution. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also described the initiative as one of the Tinubu administration’s major reforms, stressing that the proposed law provides an operational framework rather than federal control of state police.
