Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar.

Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced his death on Monday and said arrangements were underway for his burial in the family’s native Zanzibar.

Hassan became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021 when his wife assumed office following the death of President John Magufuli.

The couple had four children, including a daughter who is a lawmaker. Kenyan President William Ruto and Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye have expressed condolences to President Hassan, her family and the people of Tanzania.
