Cape Verde has begun two days of national mourning after a bus crash on Fogo Island killed 25 people, most of them children and teenagers.

Eighteen victims were buried on Sunday afternoon, following the burial of seven others earlier in the day, as families and residents gathered to accompany the coffins to the cemetery.

The bus, carrying 32 people, was returning to São Filipe late Saturday after an excursion when it veered off the road and plunged into a deep ravine. The driver, who organised the annual outing for pupils he transported to school, was among those killed.

Twelve survivors remained in hospital on Sunday, including two in serious condition, while President José Maria Neves attended some of the funerals and ordered an investigation into the crash.
