The news came as a much-needed relief to many Nigerians when earlier in the week, a prominent newspaper reported that the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups in the Niger Delta region had agreed to a 30-day ceasefire with the Federal Government.
The ceasefire was, according to the report, agreed upon to give President Muhammadu Buhari time to work out a comprehensive plan to address the problems of the Niger Delta. The truce agreement was said to have been reached by a Federal Government team led by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, representatives of the various militant groups, community leaders of the restive areas and relevant state governors.
However, the Niger Delta Avengers have punctured the report with a statement that they never entered into any ceasefire agreement with the government. The statement which was short and bereft of propaganda read: “The NDA High Command does not remember having any agreement on ceasefire with the Nigerian Government.”
