The Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Hicham El Amrani, on Sunday, resigned from his position, barely a week after his ally and former CAF president, Issa Hayatou lost his re-election bid .
In a letter to African Football Associations, El Amrani, who did not give reasons for resigning his exalted position said he would be departing on Monday.
The resignation of the 37-year old Moroccan, who had served the organization in that capacity for the past six years, may not be unconnected with the recent election of Madagascar-born Ahmad Ahmad as the new CAF president as against the incumbent, Issa Hayatou, whom he openly supported.
Meanwhile, the newly-elected CAF president has said he has accepted El Amrani’s resignation. He stated this while chairing a meeting with his elected executives on Sunday at the headquarters of the African football governing body in Cairo, Egypt,.
He is due to have another meeting on Monday to discuss who will fill the void created by El Amrani’s departure. Niger’s Dennis Idrissa is looking like a very strong contender for the vacant position.
