
Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service from the Tincan Island Command have uncovered 1,100 pump action rifles after smashing a syndicate that specialises in the smuggling of weapons into the country.
Briefing journalists on Monday about the discovery, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Ahmed Ali said the weapons which were discovered to have been smuggled in from Turkey were concealed inside a 20-foot container whose Bill of Laden indicated that it was conveying wash-hand basins.
Ali further disclosed that a customs officer suspected to have cut the seal of the container without due process as well as a clerk at the Command have been arrested in connection with the discovery.
