The Canadian government is set to curb the number of asylum seekers from Nigeria who are flooding into the country on foot via the United States.

According to a statement released by Canadian officials on Monday, about 2,500 migrants, mostly Nigerians entered Canada illegally in April, bringing the total so far this year to more than 7,300.

The Canadian Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen told a news conference that the migrants crossed on foot along a forest trail from the state of New York into Quebec Province.

Hussen said he plans to visit Nigeria in the coming days to press the issue, even as the US has also recently tightened their visa rules for Nigerians to try to prevent tourists who enter into the US and then hop across the border to file Canadian refugee claims.

The border jumping into Canada started with the election of President Donald Trump who promised to expel more than 11 million undocumented migrants from the United States.
