United States President, Donald Trump on Tuesday officially launched his campaign for re-election in the state of Florida by delivering a speech in his usual combative style. He warned of a dark future for America if his opponents win in 2020.
Defying the rain, thousands of his supporters gathered outside the city of Orlando’s Amway Centre for the rally tagged ‘45 Fest’. Fired up by the huge crowd, Trump said:
“Imagine having a Democratic president and a Democratic Congress in 2020. They would shut down your free speech. Use the power of the law to punish their opponents, which they’re trying to do now anyway.
“They would strip Americans of their constitutional rights while flooding the country with illegal immigrants in the hope it will expand their political base.
“Tonight I stand before you to officially launch my campaign for a second term as president of the United States.”
Although Trump is starting his second term campaign against the backdrop of a strong economy, controversies and his hard-right agenda have left his approval rating hovering around 40%. There are lots of agitation which may work against his victory in 2020.
Ironically and according to some analysts, the same agitations may further boost his support base largely made up of Trump fanatics and translate into electoral triumph for him.
He has however made it clear that he seeks to turn out his base with appeals to their fear of immigrants and their hostility toward Washington and the Democratic Party.
Trump’s campaign has also sought to win him full credit for the strength of the US economy and promote the message that he has stayed true to his campaign promises on issues ranging from immigration to tearing up international deals on climate change and Iran’s nuclear program.
